Newmarket, Saturday 24/09/11

After narrowly missing out on Group 1 honours with Sammitar in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket today, Mick Channon has a chance of going one better at Newmarket tomorrow in the Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1), with Lady Gorgeous.

Lady Gorgeous won one of the quickest races I’ve clocked all season for two-year-olds when beating Tickled Pink at Newbury on quick ground (similar to conditions she will encounter tomorrow), and was lost in the ground at York last time behind Best Terms, Hello Glory and Angels Will Fall and narrowly finished ahead of Shumoos.

On official figures she has upwards of 30lbs to find with the favourite Best Terms, but back on a more conventional track and more suitable ground than encountered last time then for me Lady Gorgeous is not a 50/1 shot, and is worth a chance at the prices in a competitive race.

The Cambridgeshire is a very tricky race to decipher and with the current unknowns around the best position to be on the track but with both rails seemingly favoured to the centre I’m forced to launch a three-pronged attack at the race.

Maqaraat can be expected to go well for Charles Hills, is drawn seemingly favourably in stall 2, has race against pattern class horses over ten furlongs this season, and had enough pace to destroy a maiden last time over a mile. This trip looks ideal, and the ground will certainly suit this unexposed sort and Robert Winston has every chance of lifting the big prize for Farringdon Place.

Man Of Action is another of my ‘final three’ which will love the ground, comes into the race in form and posted a decent speed figure when winning last time. He is versatile regarding tactics and has solid form figures on straight tracks with form reading: 31121. He looks priced about right at 12/1, and looks set to go close for Godolphin and Frankie Dettori.

Finally Prince Of Johanne at around 40/1 is a horse that interests me for Tom Tate. Would of gone much closer to the winner Club Oceanic at Doncaster last time but for getting hampered when making his effort, and can get into trouble due to him taking a while to find his stride in races. Has good form in handicaps on quick ground over 10F, the large field will suit him and he’ll be coming with a strong challenge late on under Johnny Fahy taking off three pounds.

  1. Good Luck with those, quite like the chances of Lightening Pearl in the Cheveley Park, and Maqaraat in the Cambridgeshire at a price.

  2. Fantastic advice with Prince Of Johanne, backed it at 50/1 this morning with Bet365 on your advice, shall be dining out tonight thanks to you.

    Well played

  3. I followed your advice backing Lady Gorgeous in the Cheveley Park and whilst she didn’t get the best ride from Ted Durcan I don’t think she is as good as you initially thought, and looks one to leave alone in such grade in future.

Had a few bets on your Cambridgeshire advices, and managed to combine the first and 2nd in a combination forecast-tricast with the fourth placed Nanton.

To say I’m gutted is an understatement but at least I hit the forecast for albeit a small amount, and secured a return with the winner.

Will be returning to this blog more often, keep it coming.
