Not quite, Spook, as that was indeed the plan. Tony McCoy went to Andrew Turnell's yard to school Michael Flips and was, by all accounts, extremely keen to ride him. However, Ainama was eventually given the green light to take up his place in the race, leaving AP's hands somewhat tied.

I'm hoping that the likely strong winds will undo most of the damage tonight's forecast rain does to the course, leaving it no worse than good-to-soft. If that proves to be the case, Red Moloney has massive - and I mean massive - claims.

Supreme Novices Hurdle

19th December at Ascot, 2m on G/S

1st Medermit 11-7
6th Alfie Flits 11-7 (beaten 10l)

13th February at Sandown, 2m 1/2f on S

1st Torphichen 11-4
2nd Trenchant 11-4 (beaten 3 3/4l)

21st February at Kempton, 2m on G/S

1st Trenchant 10-11
4th Alfie Flits 11-9 (beaten 2 3/4l)

On the basis of those form lines Medermit should be able to give Torphichen 12lbs and a 3.5l beating, but only has to give the 4yr old 8lbs today yet is over double the price. Now Torphichen may well have the greater degree of improvement left, being a 4yr old, but that improvement has to come in the last month, whereas Medermit has 6 weeks on him to find some improvement and given he has improved for each run then that is more than likely. All in all it makes Medermit look like good value at 14/1

If only form were that easy to assess, Norton, the betting game would be a piece of cake.

I wouldn't be quick to place any faith in Medermit's beating of Dee Eee Williams, with third-placed Wendel having also since been mullered in Scotland.

Sick about Medermit in that.

Jumped into the back of Cousin Vinny at the last and would surely have won had that not have happened the way he ran on up the hill....

Have to agree Medermit backers can feel slightly unlucky there.

Well the proof is in the pudding as they say

As Thommo says - gutted, if Cousin Vinny hadn't made a hash of the last I think mine would have got up, but that momentum lost was crucial

That Somersby will make a cracking chaser I'd say.
