| GA's most wanted Join Date: Feb 2009 | Right just a quick update from my big day An absolute great day,Joshua Pearce is a top lad he seemed just as excited that we'd turned out to support him as i was getting to have a look behind the scenes and mingle with some racing folk. Josh used to work at Paul Webbers yard but has since moved to Dan o Briens where he feels hes getting a better craic.Hes hoping to do,his class something or other so he can go over the sticks.Dan o brien has a fair few pointers so hes hoping to get a fair bit of experience on them.As for yesterday it gave me a whole new appreciation for the game and the work, time and money that goes into it.Normally I wouldn't have give 2 hoots about some crappy amatuer race at Wolverhampton but suddenly when I was involved a little my heart was pounding like it does before the gold cup. Josh's first words to us about the race were the horse needs the run and so do I as he had only had his appendix out 3 weeks prior ( Or it could have been that he had only been back riding for 3 weeks after the operation I'm not quite sure.) The Docker himself although he'd been got out early to be walked around was sweating up and getting worked up well before the race and looked fiery opposition for any Jockey to get a handle on nevermind an amateur barely off his sick bed. So all things considered I think Josh did pretty well to steer the 25/1 shot into 6th and given the little experience he has and his phyiscal condition and the temperament of the horse, I thought he looked pretty tidy in the saddle. Not that I would be the gretaest judge of Jockey skills but thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I can't emphasise enough what a nice kid he is and seems like he is not afraid of hard graft so I'd wish him all the best for the future and hope he can start picking some rides and gaining some valuable experience. The other interesting meet of the day was my mates niece who has been working in racing for 20+ years. She also is a great lady and we got on like a house on fire. She has previously worked at John Edwards stable I know the name but i think he was a little before my time an apparently Venitia Williams was his assistant when she was there se has also worked for someone called Clay and various others she has a fear of ridng so she hasn't really been able to progress through the ranks and her main Job has been I don't actually know what they call it but shes won a lot of prizes for the best turned out. She now works however in, again I don't know what they call it but the place that breaks horses in and gets them ready for race trainers they do a lot for Evan Williams and Henrietta Knight and shes based in Ross on wye, near Hereford. I'm not going to say much more as I'm hoping to make her a friend of the forum although she has no interest in betting she has a million stories to tell and has a real, real passion for the game especially the NH scene.Shes invited me on facebook but I get a nosebleed anywhere outside of my own little internet world of OHR and my betting accounts but I might have to brave it sometime in the near future as I'm sure I can lure her and a few of her friends into the OHR forums and they seem like the right sort of people to be posting around here ![]() Sorry if some of the details are a bit sketchy i have a memory like a sieve and there was so much to take in. If anything else comes flooding back I'll post it up. Last edited by broadsword; 08-12-09 at 11:12 AM.. |

Do you intend going next time? P.S. did look out for you in the parade-ring but couldn't see anyone who fitted the description you gave! |

| GA's most wanted Join Date: Feb 2009 | There was a young lad about 13 in there with us Michelles son he got his face on there as the cameras whipped around. But wouldn't you know it I had Just nipped to put a tenna e/w on the docker as I thought I'd look a right prat if It miraclously won and I had'nt backed it.However I was on my way back as the camera whipped around and was waiting in the entrance for the horses to walk past so I could cross back into the middle and BOOM my 2 seconds of fame Yes another piece of evidence as to how sad I am I'd V+ed and spent last night in a ,wheres wally? kind of way trying to pick my self out ![]() |

As you say it's a whole different ballgame once you get a bit behind the scenes, and as you also say does give you a much better idea of how much goes into it, and all the raw TENSION involved Look forward to your friend joining the forum, as I think I've been the only 'loidy' on here for a long time Mind you, I think that's why it's so much more civilised than all the others ![]() ![]() ![]() Do get onto Facebook: you only need add people to your page who YOU choose, and there's a huge racing presence on there (inc several of us from this forum - even the old fogeys) so don't be shy! The great thing about it is sharing pics, in the racing sense Anyway - to get back to the thread: i'm going to Huntingdon after all, on Thursday, to wield the camera at the Peterborough meeting, and as I've blagged a bed (off a stranger!) for Weds night in Cambridge I hope to be there early. |

| World Class | ![]() Great story Broadsword, glad you enjoyed your day. I know what you mean about the old blood pumping,I get more nervous when I'm at the races and 'involved' than when I'm just there to watch! The 'Edwards' that your niece worked for would have been the legendary John 'Yahoo' Edwards. He was, in my eyes, one of the old timers of NH racing,in the same era as WA Stephenson and Gordon Richards.Yahoo was the horse that famously finished 2nd to the great Dessie in the 89 Gold Cup,he was a proper mudlark and everybody thought Dessie would struggle on the ground and all the sensible ew money game for Yahoo (think he was 25/1) but as we know, Dessie found something just to outstay him on that hill, fantastic memories! That was only Yahoo's 5th run too,2nd in a Gold Cup! To outline the form he then went to Aintree and won the Martell Chase by 10l (Dessie fell ).He never won over regulation fences after that but had a remarkable couple of seasons in the PTP world winning 11 races out of 35 and being placed on a further 14 times!John also trained the very talented Monsieur Le Cure who won the 94 Sun Alliance at Cheltenham. He went on to win at Aintree the same year but never recaptured that sort of form, only winning once after that, although he was 2nd twice to a certain One Man and placed behind other smart horses. He was prominent and going well when he fell in the 96 GC and sustained a fatal injury I think it was painful for John and he slowly lowered his string after 94 before retiring in @ 97,I beleive a relative took over though. To give you some indication, both of the horse's I have mentioned were rated in the 160's so you can see they were very useful. If you also check their respective GC races they read like a who's who of great steeplechasers,Dessie,One Man,Carvills Hill,Imperial Call,The Thinker,West Tip,Charter Party,Barton Bank,Young Hustler,Rough Quest etc. Sorry to all for droning on just reliving a bit of my youth ![]() |

You won't get much of a view of the horses except during the race. Still, I hope you have a great day and manage to find a winner or two. |

| Group 2 Level Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: East Anglia | Broadsword I would upgrade, or blag/borrow/steal your way into one of the stand-side enclosures. You won't get near a horse from the Best Mate enclosure. It would be shame not to make your first experience of Cheltenham a 'proper' one |

I was in that side when Silver Buck won [ i was on that day ] and went to the what is now known as the Best Mate stand the year after as the old man and my uncle didn't want to pay the extra .. would have been better standing in the bookies . |

| World Class | Fecking freezing at Donny today! No winners but a frustrating run of placed horses concluding with Turpin Green at 33/1!!! Thought My Petra was also going to get a change of luck before being caught late. Nice of Mrs Harrington to send two and the lesser fancied to win! Not a bad day though all in all. |

| Group 3 Level Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Kensington | For my sins I am off to Warwick on Saturday - double whammy to take in some more racing (2nd meeting this month!) and to check up on son in final year at uni who we have treated to a day at the races - what more could you ask from a parent! Card looks interesting if not huge and so long as its not snowed off should be enjoyable. Tips always appreciated (was with you there on TG Skydog!). |

| World Class | Cards have cut up a bit from yesterday PS! A 4 runner Novice Chase to start doesn't exactly whet the appetite does it? Sullumo is my pick.On to the second, this should be better. Oh, a 5 runner Novice Chase, well OK its a Grade 2. Well, everyone seems to think Long Run is the next Kauto Star so he should take this unless Take The Breeze can put any pressure on from the front.OK,the 2.50. An 11 runner handicap hurdle. Not too many in any sort of form for this and with the stable in form with a jockey that gets on well with the horse and who rides this course pretty well I'd give Very Cool one more chance. The 3.20 looks an altogether harder race to fathom.Plenty in with chances and the two O'Neil horse's look interesting. Piraya of David Pipe is similar to Very Cool form wise but he looks to be a bit too high in the weights still.I'd probably chance an each way on Kia Kaha at the prices. In the Novice Hurdle at 3.55 Roko Dancer will win ![]() If you hang around for the last no doubt there will be a few of these around, Champagne Floozie ![]() Home She Goes would be my pick though.I think they ran her too quick after her win last time and now she's had 3 weeks off she could easily pick up the winning thread again. Have a nice day! |

Will have a look at your tips and let you know if they are burdened by me As for Champagne Floozie - I wonder why you thought of that?! (TBH I was gonna throw a small ew on it just for fun!) Hopefully the weather wont be as bad as you suffered last week at Donny..... |
