| The Iron Horse | Fortune sacked as Gosden #1 Jimmy Fortune sacked as No1 jockey to Flat trainer John Gosden | Sport | The Guardian Interesting development, Buick is being tipped up as being the one to replace him - which would make way for David Probert and Liam Keniry to share the Andrew Balding rides between them. Seems an interesting move, I've always thought Jimmy was a good pilot on the whole. ![]() |

I think it's a crying shame Buick will be put under such pressure so early in his career - he's barely out of his apprenticeship ffs! Gosden has some very high profile and very demanding owners - like that ******* who owns Fantasia and Rainbow View - who will EXPECT success at Group level. Buick is very good and will be a top jock one day - but he's very inexperienced at top level (perhaps that was the point!). Jimmy is a very strong and massively experienced jock, who rarely makes mistakes, and imo had every reason to feel aggrieved about being passed over by Gosden at the Breeders Cup - twice. |

Join Date: Oct 2008 | I think this is a fine move by Gosden, not only are young jocks always trying, if they are motivated enough to succeed they can become anything if they put the work in which William has done. He is not only a hard worker but has the talent in abundance, I remember he made Murtagh and Hughes sing to his tune on an outsider Buccellati at Chester which resulted in a +58sec above standard. Buick rode a G1 winner over in America and has been riding out at Jebal Ali racecourse which epitomise's the young lads determination to grow stronger and become the leading figure in the weighing room, although there is a long way to go and the 10-1 for the jockeys title maybe luring but this will be a season too soon for him and I'll expect him to be much shorter for the 2011 title. |

| Group 2 Level Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: East Anglia | Richard Hughes was number 1 to Prince Khaled wasn't he before going freelance - in fact that move was becuase he wanted to be available to be number 1 to his father in law Richard Hannon, and he has flourished since that decision. It was Martin Dwyer who left Kingsclere to go freelance, with mixed results. If Fortune goes to Kingsclere that will be bad news for Liam Keniry and for David Probert! - but esp for Liam who told me he has no retainer there. I guess Stan will be happy to have him available more regularly again, though. Musical saddles! Andthey'reoff (forgive my having to spell it right!): I agree that Buick will go right to the top, but he is way too inexperienced for the Gosden job, and there is NO substitute for experience. The pressures at that level - constant Group racing much of it international - are quite different from riding in the odd Group race at Chester or Nmkt or York on a less fancied runner. Jeez, Hayley Turner is way more experienced than Buick! I hope developments don't knock his confidence, as he's a lovley kid and a rare talent. Remember what happened when Spencer got given the Ballydoyle job much too young? - (that was via family connections as much as his talent - Vincen O'Brien was his godfather). It does them no good to be pushed centre stage like that - it's the equivalent of giving one of the walk-on parts the starring role in Hamlet. |

| Group 2 Level Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: East Anglia | Quite so, all those top owners put huge sums into the game and expect the very best - that's what they pay for. I just feel it puts enormous pressures on young shoulders, when there is so little room for inevitable mistakes, to saddle young Will with that kind of responsibility. Interesting about Hughes and the jumping, I thought his move was more to do with family committments: he's married to one of Hannon's daughters and they have started to have kids, so it makes sense for Hughsey to be based in Wilts now and mainly working for Richard. The Hannon clan is very close-knit and all live within a few miles of 'home base' at East Everleigh (the other daughter Fanny is married to Sylv Kirk in Lambourn) Hannon is going to be training for Elite this year, by the way. They have already allotted him a homebred filly by Marju o/o Baralinka and he may get one of the colts too |

I stand by what I said above though, regarding the pressures of a top yard on one so inexperienced; and I also feel very sorry for Fortune who is an excellent jock and did nothing wrong. I note btw he was riding one of Princess Haya's for Gosden today |
