The Duke’s 20 Horses to Follow For the 2007 Flat Season

Al Qasi – 4yo Colt
Elnadim (USA) (6.5f) - Delisha (Salse (USA) (10.4f))
Is without doubt one to keep on the right side of this year. Has improved with racing and that was non more so than when blasting home to beat Greek Renaissance in Group class time. He has really improve a lot with his racing and I’d wager that he’s improved again over the winter and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him winning Group 1 races over Sprint distances this year. I know one thing for sure; I’ll be following him at hopefully rewarding odds.

Bel Cantor – 4yo Colt
Largesse (10.0f) - Palmstead Belle (IRE) (Wolfhound (USA) (7.3f))
One which was noted on my stopwatch when hacking up in Soft ground at Nottingham last year and subsequently went and done the same again off a penalty. The key to this horse is the ground conditions and although he’s no world beater he could well still be improving and ran well when last seen over a trip too far. If this horse is around a similar sort of company on soft ground or even softer then he’s worth following as he could still be potentially well handicapped and the joys of being with a smaller trainer we’ll probably get larger prices than the norm.

Black Rock – 3yo Colt
Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE) (5.0f) - Biraya (Valiyar (10.1f))
Lovely big scopey son of Rock Of Gibraltar and looked too weak to fill his frame last year when running two corking races, first time in a hot maiden behind La Presse at York, then in an affair won by a promising horse at Kempton. He is sure to have strengthened up over the winter months and this well regarded sort can start with a bang in his three-year-old career, and there’s no better man to prepare them for an upward curve than Michael Jarvis.

Caldra – 3yo Gelding
Elnadim (USA) (6.5f) - Lady Rachel (IRE) (Priolo (USA) (11.0f))
Really came to himself after being gelded by Sylvester Kirk and won a couple of really nice races in fast times. None more so than his win over an inadequate 6f in the Tattersall’s Auction Stakes. I was then on him for his last run in which he was an absolute certainty according to my times, and he duly hacked up. He’s a nice sized horse and one capable of showing further improvement into his 3yo career. Will probably be out early season to contest Group races over 1m – 1m2f. He will definitely win a few races this year.

Eagle Mountain – 3yo Colt
Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE) (5.0f) - Masskana (IRE) (Darshaan (11.7f))
One for the speed raters this small but pacey son of Rock Of Gibraltar set the stopwatch on fire when hacking up in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes but subsequently disappointed in the RP Trophy. He was given far too much to do by Mick Kinane that day but was looked after by his pilot when he realised the horse wasn’t Pegasus. That said he looks the type to keep improving this year and I’d bet on him lowering a few colours of the more fancied types and he looks a live Derby prospect at this stage. He seems to need a bit of juice in the ground so hopefully the weather goes our way as he could be sensational.

Evening Time – 3yo Filly
(Keltos (FR) - Shadow Casting (Warning (8.8f))
Made a really pleasing debut for Kevin Prendergast when hacking up in soft ground at Fairyhouse. She went into my notebook then as a possible Guineas/Oaks prospect before coming out again and readily seeing off Theann in fine style. She currently holds an entry for the Irish 1000 Guineas and looks the type to improve even further into her three-year-old career. Her sire Keltos was versatile as far as the ground was concerned and was a good winner of a vintage Lockinge. She will most probably be overlooked the first time of asking against some of the better bred types and could well go off a big price. She will definitely be one for the higher class of races.

Go On Be A Tiger – 3yo Colt
Machiavellian (USA) (9.1f) - Queen’s Logic (IRE) (Grand Lodge (USA) (9.7f))
Was given plenty of time to mature in his two-year-old days which is rare for a Mick Channon trained two-year-old as he usually likes to get a few runs into them and see how good they are. Which suggests this horse is held in the highest regard. The way this horse took time to find his stride before winning with some authority at Newbury last October suggests he’ll be better over even further than his pedigree suggests. I’d imagine he’ll be at home over 10 furlongs to middle distances this year and is sure to have grown and got better since we last saw him. It remains to be seen how good this horse is but he still holds a Derby entry like most promising horses do at this time of year.

Innocent Air – 4yo Filly
Galileo (IRE) (10.3f) - Minskip (USA) (The Minstrel (CAN) (9.9f))
Hopefully still in training with John Gosden, I can only assume she needed her re-appearance after her break before failing to stay the trip in the Oaks. She then seemed to find the mile too short before blitzing home over 10 furlongs on her latest start. She clocked a classy time there and it’d take a good one to beat her over 10 furlongs when fully fit. She also looks the type to improve with age and if she runs again this year she’s one to keep on your side.

Luscivious – 3yo Gelding
Kyllachy (5.5f) - Lloc (Absalom (7.2f))
Really improved for abit of juice in the ground and experience when picking off a couple of backend races at Catterick. His latest run he really whizzed home in pattern class time and hopefully he’s continued that steady upward curve ahead of his three-year-old season. If he has continued to improve and strengthen over the winter he’s still really well handicapped off a mark of 91, and looks a type to compete in the top sprint handicaps providing the ground is soft or thereabouts. He’s got a future in this game and is one to note.

Mia’s Boy – 3yo Colt
Pivotal (7.5f) - Bint Zamayem (IRE) (Rainbow Quest (USA) (11.1f))
Regarded as a ‘pigeon-catcher’ by Peter Chapple-Hyam and was somewhat disappointing when heavily punted on his debut. The ground could well have been a key element in his sinking, being by Pivotal the good-to-firm conditions likely didn’t suit and when push came to shove the horse just couldn’t act on the ground. Since then Peter hasn’t run him anywhere else and appears to be looking after the horse that’s reportedly had a few small problems which prevented his belated racecourse appearance as a two-year-old. That said he’s a type to improve and is one to catch first time out this season at hopefully a fair price.

Mofarij – 3yo Colt
Bering (10.0f) - Pastorale (Nureyev (USA) (8.2f))
Brought to my attention last year by a friend of mine this horse made an eye-catching debut when going down narrowly to Sir Michael Stoute’s Derby prospect Spanish Moon. He was then given time off to mature and strengthen up ahead of a busy three-year-old career and he kicked that off to a fantastic start when putting aside a fair rival in Dubai. He is a half brother to Iffraajj but it’s felt that he’ll never a 10f-12f to be at his best. Either way he looks an exciting prospect and one which can fly the flag for Godolphin.

Resplendent Light – 2yo Colt
Fantastic Light (USA) (11.4f) - Bright Halo (IRE) (Bigstone (IRE) (8.3f))
This unraced two-year-old is currently in training with Willie Muir. He’s a lovely big sort who’s been pressing all the right buttons at home in recent work. Holds a Derby entry and probably wont be good enough to run in the race but that said he looks a horse of distinct potential and I’d imagine the stable will take there time with this sort, who should be seen around a racecourse in the Summer months. He is definitely one to follow though and will probably go off a rewarding price first time up.

Rock ‘N’ Roller – 3yo Colt
Sagacity (FR) - Diamond Dance (FR) (Dancehall (USA) (10.0f))
A horse with distinct potential was the vibe coming out of the Willie Muir yard early last year. It took a while to get him onto the racecourse but once he got there he didn’t go unbacked. Was slowly into stride and green throughout the race but made a bit of late headway and will definitely have improved for that run. He was next seen out at Salisbury when once again punted made good ground late on to finish fourth. There’s enough to suggest this horse has plenty of ability and will probably have been too weak for his frame to really go through with his efforts. Will have strengthened up over the winter and looks a sure-fire winner waiting to happen over middle distances, and will most probably make into a very useful handicapper.

Seabow – 4yo Colt
Rainbow Quest (USA) (11.1f) - Dream Bay (USA) (Mr Prospector (USA) (8.7f))
Nice scopey sort like many of Rainbow Quest’s progeny. He took a while to get the hang of things but was very impressive when last seen at Nottingham. He looked green still that day and will only improve for another winter on his back. He will definitely win races this year and will most probably start off in Handicap Company, but could well play a hand in better grade of races later on in the year.

Shahin – 4yo Colt
Kingmambo (USA) (9.9f) - String Quartet (IRE) (Sadler's Wells (USA) (11.3f))
Is regarded as ‘top class’ by his trainer Marcus Tregonning but his career has so far been blighted by injury. Had been off for 11 months when making his comeback in a Group 3 event when finishing last and picking up another niggling injury. The team have been working on him all winter and believe to have sorted his problems. He will be contesting a lot of the Group races this year if they can keep him sound and he’s definitely one horse to keep in your pocket.

Shumookh – 4yo Gelding
Mujahid (USA) (8.5f) - Midway Lady (USA) (Alleged (USA) (11.6f))
A lightly raced half brother to Eswarah, he had been gelded before seeing a racecourse but he did nothing but improve for experience last year, culminating in a facile romp in Group Class time at Pontefract. You can forgive him his last run when well beaten as he’d look wintry in the paddock and was beaten before half way. He looks the type to find further improvement this year and can only get better as he’s a nice stamp of a horse. I wager that he’ll contest in Group Company before the year is out and he certainly is capable of landing a blow in Group 2 Races if running to form.

Sticky Tape – 3yo Filly
Royal Applause (7.6f) - Golden Symbol (Wolfhound (USA) (7.3f))
Currently in training with Jamie Osborne (Also owns her). This unraced filly has been working like a horse of some decent potential in early workouts, and looks a type definitely capable of picking up a maiden event at one of the smaller tracks. She looks the type to go handicapping over 6 and 7 furlongs and she has the speed to be competitive at the minimum. Has been given plenty of time to fill her frame as she’s quite a big strapping filly and is one of the better horses in the yard. Probably not one to be on when debuting as the stable variably improve for there first run but she’s a horse worth keeping on the right side of

Strobe – 3yo Gelding
Fantastic Light (USA) (11.4f) – Sadaka (USA) (Kingmambo (USA) (9.9f))
A horse in which was touted as one to follow by Jamie Osborne which boasts a very good looking mile-middle distance pedigree, so it looks odd to me that this horse had been running over sprint trips as a two-year-old. Comments from his debut run “Soon outpaced always behind”, add to that his second run “Slowly into stride, outpaced” both of those runs over 6 furlongs, then his last run of the season was back down to 5 furlongs “Soon ridden and outpaced, never a factor”. This in itself has got the horse handicapped and will most probably be at a lowly level too as all the horses who’ve finished above him by some way have been awarded marks of 60, and in the 50’s. He definitely looks the sort to improve for a trip given his pedigree and I’d watch out for him now that he’s been gelded and can run in a handicap off a very low mark.

Teofilo – 3yo Colt
Galileo (IRE) (10.3f) – Speirbhean (IRE) (Danehill (USA) (9.0f))
Obviously the whole world already knows about Teofilo and how good he is/could potentially be, so I’m not going to go on and on about him. All I will say is is that he is beatable and not a machine but I do wish him the best of British for his three-year-old career and hopefully we can see a vintage year from a potential superstar.

War And Peace – 3yo Colt
Danehill (USA) (9.0f) - Pipalong (IRE) (Pips Pride (6.8f))
Has been catching the eye in recent gallop works at Ballydoyle, and was said to be a really smart juvenile last year but never made it to the course. He has fantastic breeding out of Tim Easterby’s classy sprinter Pipalong by Danehill. That would automatically suggest he could be equally effective over sprint distances than over a mile. He’s currently entered up in the Irish 2000 Guineas but I’d have reservations about him staying the trip. That said she looks a type to following given they’ve given him time to grow and come to himself, will probably take up an engagement in a small early-season maiden over in Ireland but he’s definitely one to follow.

Quality.

Teofilo is my horse for the season, hardly thinking outside the box, but why should I?

Flat racing used to be my favourite, but then my love for it wained, but now I'm finding myself wanting it again, coming just at the right time. So many hard luck stories in flat races though so I expect some sickening moments.

Teofilo, pfft, hate him.

Great write up btw lad.
